August 10, 1949 – June 16, 2025

John Bradshaw Schaeffer passed away at the age of 75 after a life marked by curiosity, quiet perseverance, and a deep appreciation for community.

Born on August 10, 1949, John had a thoughtful nature and a strong sense of independence. He was a proud member of the Superior District Library Board of Trustees, and took great pride being involved in the local library and community programs in the various cities he called home. He appreciated the works of others—whether through books, music, or visual art—and found meaning in seeing people create and share.

In later years, John found joy in baking bread, a quiet tribute to his late wife’s legacy, slinging loaves at the farmers market. Continuing a tradition that held practical and symbolic meaning, revisiting memories of an earlier life.

Among his most cherished places was Sugar Island, where his family built strong bonds and lasting memories. It remained close to his heart. The barn on the property was built by the family, their names etched into the barn floor—a quiet testament to their time together.

John faced and survived one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, an experience that shaped his perspective. He often spoke about the power of mindset, sharing advice with others to “spend some time each day visualizing a return to normal, doing things you enjoy, and you will increase the likelihood of it happening.” His message was simple but powerful: keep your expectations good.

He found comfort in music, especially listening to his son play guitar. He was so proud of his son’s talents and wanted everyone to hear. He even called in one of the nurses to listen in his final days.

John’s life was not without challenge, but he met those challenges with quiet resilience. He leaves behind a legacy of community participation, thoughtfulness, endurance, and appreciation for the meaningful moments that can be found in ordinary days.

John is survived by his son Joe Schaeffer and daughter-in-law Holly Schaeffer, sisters Sarah Brezavar (Floyd) of New York City, Kitty Maidenberg (Mike) of Oakland California, Leslie Dupin of Petoskey Michigan and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife Sue Schaeffer (2013), his parents Joe and Jane Schaeffer (1991/1993) and his brother-in-law Serge Dupin (2014).
